Student cheated after conman fails to pay for car purchased online

KUALA LUMPUR: A university student has been left reeling after not receiving full settlement for the sale of her car to an online buyer.
For Nancy Chan (not her real name), the ordeal began on May 20 last year when she was approached by the buyer on a popular online classifieds ads store.
Following protracted negotiations, a price of RM114,000 was agreed for the sale of her car.
This was followed by the transfer of ownership two days later.
However she only received a payment of RM14,000.
This left her in a quandry and led her to reach out for help.
"Once the transfer of ownership was done, I passed him the car. However, I have not received the full payment for the sale," said Chan said during a press conference organised by the Segambut division DAP.
Chan said that her continued requests for the payment was met with all sorts of excuses from the buyer.
"Ten months have passed since and all I got from the 'buyer' is a mere RM14,000."
In the ensuing months it has transpired that the buyer is a serial conman.
"To make matter worse, I have been made aware that the ownership of the car has now been transferred to another person's name," she said.
Chan has lodged a police report at the Kota Damansara police station over the issue.
Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng who was present at the press conference urged action to be taken against what appears to be a serial fraudster.
"This is not the first time that he (the buyer) had cheated another individual in a similar transaction.
"For the past two years, I have received reports of similar cases with similar modus operandi only to find that the same culprit has been involved," said Lim.
