AFTER 17 days of anticipation, Samsung Malaysia Electronics launched the highly-anticipated Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ smartphone in Malaysia. The device was first announced at the Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona, Spain,
In conjunction with its Malaysian debut on March 16, Samsung Malaysia Electronics held a launch event on the evening of March 15 at Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur.
This is not the first time Samsung Malaysia Electronics has held a major event at Pavilion. The centre court was also where the Samsung Galaxy Note8 made its Malaysian debut last year.
More than a thousand fans gathered for the launch of the Galaxy S9 and S9+ and the special appearance of Korean superstar, Park Bo-Gum. The actor is best known for his role as a psychopathic lawyer in Hello Monster, a genius Go player in Reply 1988, and a Joseon crown prince in Love in the Moonlight.
The Galaxy S9 and S9+ made its world debut on Feb 27. The follow up to the S8 and S8+ sees Samsung pushing the limits of mobile phone photography further, with the industry's first dual-aperture camera.
Dual-aperture lets the camera on the Galaxy S9 and S9+, adapt to dark and light situations more swiftly, and is especially effective in bright conditions and gives the photographer more freedom.
Another touted feature of the Samsung S9 and S9+ is the ability to create and puppeteer your virtual avatar. Known as AR Emoji, the feature lets you be an animated star in your instant messages.
You can also use your facial expressions to puppeteer the faces of Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and the heroes from The Incredibles and send them as emoji or animated messages, in a partnership with Disney.
The most distinctive differences concerning features between the Galaxy S9 and S9+ are its screen size and camera setup.
The S9 has an improved 5.8in QHD+ Infinity Display, similar to the gorgeous display we have seen on the S8. Likewise, the S9+ sports a 6.2in curved Super AMOLED screen with the same 18.5:9 aspect ratio that we know and love.
The gorgeous display is paired with two of the loudest speakers ever installed on a Samsung Galaxy device. These speakers are tuned by AKG, and can take advantage of the Adobe Atmos audio feature, which creates the best virtual sound spaces.
For the cameras, the S9, gets a 12MP dual-aperture sensor, while the S9+ gets a dual camera setup.
The primary sensor on the S9+ is the much-touted 12MP dual-aperture sensor, which can switch between F1.5 and F2.4 aperture, while the other is fixed at F2.4.
The cameras on both models also feature optical image stabilisation (OIS) as well as both a laser and dual-pixel autofocus.
One similarity on both phones is an Exynos 9810 chipset. However, the S9 will have 4GB of RAM, while the S9+ will have 6GB of memory.
On the front side, both the S9 and the S9+ get an 8MP F1.7 camera with autofocus.
They also feature the ability to record video in 'Super Slow-Mo', or 960 frames per second. This lets you record and expand a 0.2-second moment, into a six-second video.
With the launch, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ are now available in lilac purple, midnight black, and coral blue. However, the 256GB version of the Galaxy S9+ will only be available in midnight black.
The Galaxy S9 is only available with 64GB (RM3,299), while the Galaxy S9+ is available with 64GB (RM3,799), 128GB (RM3,999), and 256GB of storage (RM4,399).
To celebrate its launch in Malaysia, Samsung Malaysia Electronics will be kicking off a limited time roadshow promotion in Pavilion KL, Queensbay Mall Penang, and Aeon Bandar Dato Onn, Johor Baru.
From March 16 to 18, customers who purchase a new Galaxy S9 or S9+ will be eligible to receive exclusive gifts from Samsung.
The gift includes a free Samsung wireless charger stand worth RM279 (limited to 2,300 units).
Customers could also get a 30% discount for a purchase of a Samsung Gear Sport, and RM50 off of an LED View Cover, Standing Clear Cover, or Alcantara Cover.
There will also be a trade up programme which allows customers to trade in selected devices with an extra trade up value of RM400, and a 12-month 0% Easy Payment Plan on offer.
Additionally, customers who purchase a Galaxy S9 or S9+ and activate their Bixby, Samsung Member, and Samsung Pay accounts will also receive 1,500 Samsung Rewards Points.
