KUALA LUMPUR: The Umno Grassroot Movement (GAUM) today lodged a police report on allegations of foreign interference aimed at overthrowing the existing government.
Its chairman Datuk Zulkarnain Mahdar said the report was lodged at the Sri Petaling Police Station near here to enable the authorities to investigate the alleged involvement of opposition leaders.
He said the police report was lodged after GAUM obtained information on foreign interference as well as the modus operandi, by using foreign media to publish defamatory articles against the government.
"On March 11, GAUM sent a letter to a magazine in the United Kingdom which published a defamatory article against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and the government.
Zulkarnain alleged that the defamatory article was published in 'the editor' section of London-based the Economist on March 10.
He said the article claimed that there were elements of manipulation in the upcoming 14th General Elections.
On March 13, the Election Commission (EC) dismissed the allegations that the election system and the delineation of electoral boundaries are designed to favour certain political parties in the next general election.
On Sunday, Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said he did not rule out the possibility of efforts undertaken to topple the Barisan Nasional (BN) with foreign assistance. — Bernama
