Pak Mie Shelter given 3 months to vacate premises by MBAS

KUALA LUMPUR: A rescuer of stray animals is distressed following a letter from the Alor Star City Council (MBAS) ordering her to move the animals from their current premises in Alor Star, Kedah.
Halijah Idris, also fondly known as Mak Intan, told theSun today she received the letter on March 18, which claimed as the "wild dogs" were loud, it was necessary for them to be moved to suitable premises within three months.
The letter, which is available on Pak Mie Shelter's Facebook, has been shared 130 times.
"We have been operating for the past 10 years with some 500 stray dogs which have been rescued from various circumstances. I do not understand the need to move after being here so long.
"It costs almost RM10,000 to operate the sanctuary per month which we rely on donations. As we feed them rice, it costs RM3,000 a month.
"It is not as if we can move out from a house. The dogs are my children," she said.
"I have asked for advice from various parties on this matter. The sanctuary is registered with the RoS. We can't find land in a short time. I appeal to the authorities to allow us to continue with our work in peace," the former medical assistant added.
Halijah, 71, is the widow of Muhammad Azmi Ismail, who is widely known as Pak Mie, who died at the age of 58 from stroke.
The Tanjung Bendahara sanctuary continues until now due to Halijah's efforts.
She was named as one of the recipients of the "Dignifying A Profession Award" by the Rotary Club of Petaling Jaya.
