Indonesian man jailed, fined RM10,000 for bribing cop

KOTA KINABALU: An Indonesian fisherman was sentenced to 10 days jail and fined RM10,000 by the Sessions Court here today after he pleaded guilty to bribing a policeman.
Judge Abdul Bakar Manaf handed down the sentence on Chass Diaz, 39, who pleaded guilty to the charge.
He was ordered to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest on March 15, this year.
Chass was charged under Section 17 (b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which provides an imprisonment for up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.
Chass was charged with offering a RM500 bribe to a police corporal at the office of the Penampang district police headquarters (IPD) as an inducement for the policeman to not take action against his friend who had no valid identification documents.
The offence was committed personal at about 1.52pm last March 14 at the Penampang district police headquarters.
MACC deputy public prosecutor Rozanna Abdul Hadi appeared for the prosecution while the accused was unrepresented. — Bernama
