BALIK PULAU: Barisan Nasional (BN) has what it takes to bring progress and development to Penang, said a senior Umno leader today.
Penang Umno vice-chairman Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya said that during BN's tenure from 1990 until 2008, the state recorded unprecedented economic growth, which was cemented with the completion of two cross-channel bridges, a Unesco listing of George Town as a heritage enclave, and the elevation of Penang as the Asian version of Silicon Valley.
He accused the present government of just building on BN's legacy in the state.
Hilmi added that development in Balik Pulau has been stagnant from 2008 to 2013.
The deputy health minister claimed that development in Penang had come to a standstill despite what the present government may say, adding that there have been no major infrastructure projects to alleviate congestion.
Hilmi was speaking to reporters after officiating the opening of a hall at the Bayan Indah police headquarters here.
He also urged the people not to buy into the sweet promises of the opposition to eradicate the Goods and Services Tax (GST), adding that it remains to be seen where they are going to get the funds to replace the consumerism tax.
Hilmi intimated that perhaps the opposition may have to trim down the civil service by letting go of contract and senior officials to offset the loss of funds.
