KEMAMAN: The high quality of squids found in Terengganu waters with prices reaching RM200/kg in foreign markets has resulted in foreign fishermen not afraid of encroaching into the state's waters despite the risk of arrest by the Malaysian Anti-Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA).
MMEA Eastern Region Maritime deputy director (Operations) Captain Maritime V. Pannir Selvan said 20 foreign fishing boats were nabbed during the squid season in Terengganu between January and March last year.
"This year, MMEA nabbed 15 foreign fishing boats and based on the trend, each year more foreign fishermen will encroach into the country's waters to reap lucrative profits during the squid season," he told a press conference here. today.
The MMEA successfully arrested a foreign fishing boat believed to be from Vietnam at 3 pm yesterday about 62 nautical miles from Kuala Kemaman.
Pannir Selvan said an inspection of the boat found that all seven crew including the skipper, aged 23 to 32 years, did not have valid identification documents. — Bernama
