Plastic ban policy is not reversible: Elizabeth Wong

SHAH ALAM: Barisan Nasional will not be able to persuade voters in Selangor with its promise to reverse the plastic ban policy if it comes into power, state exco Elizabeth Wong said.
The tourism, consumer affairs and environment exco said the state opposition's intention to do away with the policy was merely a promise to bargain in the upcoming general election.
"The opposition can promise anything during the election season, but I believe the people of Selangor are wise voters.
"They cannot be influenced with only 20 sen," she said during the question and answer session at the Selangor state legislative assembly.
She was responding to a supplementary question from Yaakob Sapari (PKR-Kota Anggerik) who asked on Wong's view over Selangor BN promise to reverse the no plastic bag policy if it won the election.
The policy was implemented by the state government in Jan 2017, which make it mandatory for business owners to charge 20sen for every plastic bag requested by consumers.
Last Wednesday, Selangor BN chairman Tan Sri Noh Omar pledged that consumers would receive 20 sen for using their own bag for shopping if BN managed to wrest the state from Pakatan Harapan.
Responding to the suggestion from BN, Wong challenged the national coalition to implement such policy in states that are under their control.
"Those who came with the idea, do it first in states under BN. Do it in Kuala Lumpur. Why didn't you do it?
"Do it and show a good example. If it was proven to be effective, maybe the state government will follow," she added.
