KUANTAN: The Coroner's Court here today ruled that the death of a father and daughter at the Educational Innovation in Motorsport and Automotive Race (EIMARace) 2016 in Jalan Skupa, Indera Mahkota here, as an unavoidable incident.
Coroner Dazuki Ali said the organiser of the race, the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), had planned the race adequately despite the change of location and race route at the new circuit at Jalan Sukpa, Indera Mahkota here.
"The involved parties have complied with the standards set for organising the race and took the necessary measures in terms of safety including the safety of the riders.
"This can be seen from the inspections conducted from time to time and when there were inadequate measures found, steps to improve the security were then carried out," he said while reading out his brief judgment.
Dazuki also decided that the death of Izwan Isa, 39, at 12.20pm on Sept 25, 2016 and his youngest child, Nur Zulaikha, five, at 2.20pm on the same day at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital here was the result of a road accident.
Previously, the inquest proceeding was also informed that the accident had caused the victim's wife, Siti Suhaiza Seman, 38, and their eldest son Muhammad Izz Daniel, seven, to sustain injuries.
Dazuki added that Izwan, who was a factory supervisor, suffered severe injuries in the chest, including broken ribs, resulting in severe bruising and tearing in the lungs.
While Nur Zulaikha suffered severe head injuries and brain swelling that blocked the blood flow, resulting in death.
"On how they got killed, I found they were both hit by a go-kart machine number 27 that crashed to the right side of the circuit before breaking the water barrier after trying to avoid collision with other go-karts number 22 and number 33," he said, after reviewing the testimony of 20 witnesses since the inquest started on Dec 11 last year.
The previous testimony also confirmed the go-kart number 27 driver was Azril ba'ith Razak, 25, representing the Universiti Multimedia Melaka, while go-kart number 22 was driven by Ahmad Saifuddin Mahamud, 23, (Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara Wakaf Tapai, Terengganu) and the machine number 33 was driven by Mohd Rashid Safuan Mohd Sopie, 19, (Muadzam Shah Polytechnic).
The proceeding was assisted by deputy public prosecutor Wahida Zainal Abidin; counsel Datuk Syed Azimal Amir Syed Abu Bakar, representing the event organiser, the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM); representative of the victims' family Che Arrffin Mohd Ali; Mohd Syahril Daud (Motorsports Association of Malaysia); Juliana Abu Bakar and Rosmah Rosli (Kuantan Municipal Council) and Ahmad Hazwan Hamdan (Fraser's Hill Development Corporation). — Bernama
