New laws needed for bicycle lanes: Senate

KUALA LUMPUR: A new law needs to formulated to monitor the usage of bicycle lanes in the federal capital, the Senate sitting was told today.
Deputy Federal Territories Minister Datuk Dr Loga Balan Mohan said at present the use of 11km of bicycle lanes costing RM4-million was under the current Road Transport Act.
"We need a law to monitor the usage of these bicycle lanes which at present, we have none," he said in reply to a supplementary question from Senator Datuk Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah who asked if a new law should be formulated before these lanes are officially opened and if the usage of the lanes is limited to conventional bicycles.
Commenting further, Loga Balan said at present the lanes are only for conventional bicycles and not open to motorised bicycles or skateboards.
He said bicycle lanes which are shared with other vehicles are now being audited to look at the long-term safety aspects.
In a separate development, Loga Balan said Kuala Lumpur City Hall was reviewing all routes to 99 Wonderland Park in Selayang which were congested during peak hours after it was opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak on March 14.
"We are studying connecting the road to the Middle Ring Road 2 while some roads in the area may be made one-way," he said. — Bernama
