KUANTAN: A trader ended up losing more than RM20,000 after being duped by a man who claimed that he could help the victim win lotteries.
Pahang Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Supt Mohd Wazir Mohd Yusof said the 22-year-old male victim was initially contacted by the suspect via the WeChat mobile application on March 2.
"The suspect claimed that the lottery ticket purchased by the victim was close to winning prizes, and that he could help the victim to buy lotteries with a guaranteed win at just RM250.
"The victim then was contacted several times from March 8 to 28 to bank in more cash amounting to RM20,686.70," he said when contacted, here today.
Mohd Wazir said the trader then lodged a report at the Lipis district police headquarters yesterday after realising that he was cheated, as he did not receive the prizes and that his calls to the suspect were blocked.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating which carries a jail term of up to 10 years, whipping, and being liable for a fine if convicted, he added. — Bernama
