SEGAMAT: Segamat was today declared as a new development area under the East Coast Economic Region (ECER), in the government's efforts to ensure rapid socio-economic growth in the region.
When making the announcement, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak said that the latest development would open up a new era for Segamat as well as boosting the district's growth to a higher level.
"Since we want to develop Segamat as a whole, I hereby declare that Segamat has been included in ECER.
"It will be a new growth area to be developed by the government with ECER (authorities)," he said when officiating the ground-breaking ceremony of the Gemas-Johor Baru Electric Double Tracking rail project here, today.
He said taking into account Segamat's link with the districts of Mersing and Rompin, it was suitable for Segamat to be included in the ECER development area.
Meanwhile, Najib also announced the redevelopment of Segamat Inland Port costing RM20 million.
He hoped that the allocation would help develop the port in a more integrated and holistic manner, thereby attracting more investments, which would benefit the locals.
Also present at the event were Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam, who is also Segamat MP. — Bernama
