FROM the Good Samaritan who provided the 10-sen flea market, 10-sen ambulance service and 10-sen taxi and the RM1 accommodation, the needy can now transfer bodies of deceased from Hospital Serdang, National Cancer Institute and Kuala Lumpur Hospital to anywhere in Peninsular Malaysia for just RM1.
Kuan Chee Heng, the founder of the Community Policing Malaysia, started the hearse service after learning of a case where a man couldn't afford to retrieve the body of his dead father.
In a Facebook post on April 6, Kuan said the man could not settle the full hospital bill but was allowed to pay what he could. He also couldn't afford to transport his father's remains from Kuala Lumpur to Johor.
Kuan made it possible with contributions from Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who provided the van and Petron Malaysia which sponsored the fuel. The remaining costs such as accommodation and food were covered by public donations.
