GE14: Selangor has the highest number of voters

PUTRAJAYA: With a total of 2,415,074 registered voters, Selangor has the highest number of voters qualified to cast their votes in the 14th General Election (GE14).
According to the Election Commission (EC) statistics made available to the media after being gazetted yesterday, 2,388,614 registered voters in Selangor are regular electors; early voters comprising military personnel and their spouses (25,462); and absentee voters who are overseas (998).
Johor recorded the second highest number at 1,817,999, followed by Perak (1,510,864), Sarawak (1,220,960) and Kedah (1,146,492).
Three states with the lowest number of voters were the Federal Territory of Putrajaya 27,306, Labuan (28,356) and Perlis (150,221).
The electoral rolls as of the fourth quarter of 2017 containing the names of 14,940,624 electors will be used for the GE14, in which women made up 50.58% (7,557,187) of the voters, while men accounted for 49.42% (7,383,437).
In terms of age groups, the EC statistics showed that voters aged between 30 and 39 made up the highest percentage at 23.92%, followed by those aged between 50 and 59 (18.35%) and between 21 and 29 (17.02%).
A total of 66,831 (0.45%) of the voters were those aged 90 and above, while those aged between 80 and 89 made up 1.86% or 278,016 voters.
The number of seats up for contest in the GE14 remains the same as in GE13, that is 222 parliamentary seats and 505 state seats.
Eleven non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and three local universities have been appointed as local observers for the GE14, beginning from the nomination day on April 28 until the results are announced.
In Peninsular Malaysia, the NGOs and universities involved are the Malaysian Youth Council, Persatuan Pengundi Wawasan Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Universiti Kuala Lumpur and Persatuan Orang Kota Bharu (OKB).
In Sarawak, six NGOs appointed as local observers are Sarawak Malays National Association, Orang Ulu National Association, Dayak Bidayuh National Association, Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Sibu Melanau Association and Miri Chinese Association.
In Sabah, the two NGOs appointed as local observers are Sabah Youth Council and Sabah Bumiputera Chamber of Commerce.
As for international observers to GE14, seven countries have confirmed their attendance so far, namely Indonesia, Thailand, Maldives, Timor Leste, Azerbaijan, Cambodia and Kyrgystan. – Bernama
