Penang gov't launches free bus service along 12 routes
BUKIT MERTAJAM: The Penang state government today launched its free bus service named the Congestion Alleviation Transport (CAT) in collaboration with Rapid Penang, on 12 selected routes in the state.
The twelve routes are George Town, Bayan Baru, Sungai Dua, Tanjung Tokong, Ayer Itam and Balik Pulau on the island, and Seberang Jaya, Nibong Tebal, Bukit Mertajam, Simpang Ampat, Bertam and Batu Kawan on the mainland.
State Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said this was the second launch of the service after the first one on April 1, which involved two routes, Air Itam and Paya Terubong.
"We will also provide bus stops in 12 areas identified by Rapid Penang that require this bus service, with a large number of passengers," he said when launching the free bus service, here today.
He said the free bus service was introduced by the Penang government in 2009 in the George Town area, including free shuttles for workers in the industrial area around Bayan Lepas who live in Seberang Perai.
He said RM15 million was allocated to provide free bus services on the island and the mainland. — Bernama
