PETALING JAYA: MIC president Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam will defend his Segamat parliamentary seat in the upcoming general election.
In response to rumours that Subramaniam was looking for a "safe" seat to contest, and that he was eyeing either Hulu Selangor or Tapah, senior party leaders said this was the work of unscrupulous people out to smear his name.
"The president has already made a statement that he is going to defend his Segamat seat. There is no reason for him to be looking at other seats.
"He has done a lot for the people in his constituency and remains confident that he can regain the seat," said a senior party leader.
This was confirmed by Hulu Selangor MP, Datuk P. Kamalanthan, who is also deputy education minister.
Kamalanathan said Subramaniam was confident of retaining his seat and was not looking to contest anywhere else as rumoured.
He said as of now, they do not know who the other candidates are and where they were going to contest.
He also clarified reports that said he would be defending his Hulu Selangor parliament seat.
"It is up to the party president to decide. As of now, I am just continuing with my work here and when the time comes, the Prime Minister and our party president will make the decision on the candidates to be fielded.
"There were reports which misquoted me saying that I would be contesting in my constituency. I wish to clarify that I made no such statement. I am merely waiting for the final announcement," he added.
