Fire safety checks done at all polling, counting centres

PUTRAJAYA: The Fire and Rescue Department has conducted checks on fire safety at all the polling stations and vote-counting centres for the 14th general election, said its director-general, Datuk Seri Wan Mohd Nor Ibrahim.
He said the department checked the fire-safety systems and the exit routes of these premises, many of which are schools.
"We conducted the checks soon after the Election Commission handed us the list of the stations and centres," he said to reporters after the monthly assembly of the department at its headquarters here today.
The EC had reportedly said that 8,989 buildings would be used as polling stations where 28,995 polling streams would be provided.
Polling in GE14 is on May 9. Nomination for the election in on April 28 and early voting, on May 5.
Wan Mohd Nor said the department was ready to handle any relevant matters up to a week after polling.
He also said that a directive had been issued freezing the leave of 10,000 fire and rescue department officers and personnel from nomination day up to a week after polling.
Fire and Rescue Department awards were also presented at the assembly.
Cuepacs president Datuk Azih Muda received the Fire and Rescue Department Director-General Award.
At today's assembly, Wan Mohd Nor also launched an urban agriculture programme for fire and rescue stations nationwide whereby the stations would cultivate vegetables on vacant areas at their premises. — Bernama
