SERIAN: The Human Resources Ministry, through the Occupational Safety and Health Department, wants the people to take seriously safety and health aspects to reduce road accidents among workers.
Its caretaker minister, Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem, said based on the Safety and Health Master Plan (OSH MP) 2016-2020, among the goals, was to reduce the accident rate from 2.81 accidents per 1,000 workers to 2.53 accidents.
"In terms of fatal accident rate, DOSH wants to reduce it from 4.84 deaths for every 100,000 workers to 4.36 deaths. I'm sure these two rates will decline if employers, employees and the public work together to focus on safety and health," he said.
He was speaking at a media conference after opening the Occupational Safety and Health Open Day and Sarawak Pan Borneo Highway Construction Project 2018 at SJK Chung Hua Serian Multipurpose Hall, here today.
Also present were National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, Human Resources Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Mohd Gazali Abas, ministry's deputy-secretary general (Operation) Datuk Mohamed Elias Abu Bakar, DOSH director-general Omar Mat Piah and NIOSH executive director Ayop Salleh.
At the event, he also announced SMK Tebedu as a pioneer in the OSH in School programme and handed over fire extinguishers to be distributed to 78 schools in Serian district.
The Occupational Safety and Health in School concept is a comprehensive concept and views the school as a work place, while the school is also subject to the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (OSHA 1994). — Bernama
