PUTRAJAYA: Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor is prepared to face any candidate contesting for the Putrajaya parliamentary seat in this 14th general election (GE14).
He said the people in Putrajaya knew him and were aware of the services provided by him and the government in ensuring their well-being and interests.
"Whoever can come and contest in Putrajaya. I have no problem. I have been involved in a contest with Federal Territory PAS leader, PAS vice-president.
"I believe the people of Putrajaya know who is the good candidate and who is not," he told reporters at an event in Precinct 11K and 11F here today.
He was asked on a report by a news portal that former Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman would be the candidate for Parti Pribumi Bersama Malaysia (BERSATU) to contest for the Putrajaya parliamentary seat.
In the 13th general election, Tengku Adnan defeated Husam Musa, who contested on PAS ticket, with a majority of 5,541 votes.
The EC has fixed May 9 as polling day for GE14, with April 28 as nomination day and May 5 for early voting.
In another development, Tengku Adnan reminded Umno members to remain loyal and respect the party's decision on the choice of candidates for GE14.
"Those who do not respect the party's decision will be expelled from the party immediate;y because we do not want a thorn in the flesh in the party. So, whoever fights for the party must be sincere and honest," he added.
On pressure by some quarters who want their choice of candidates as the BN candidates for the Wangsa Maju and Bandar Tun Razak parliamentary seats, Tengku Adnan said all quarters should be calm and patient as the names of candidates had yet to be announced.
Yesterday, about 30 individuals, claiming to represent several non-governmental organisations in Wangsa Maju submitted a memorandum seeking caretaker Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak to renominate Wangsa Maju Umno division leader Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Shafei Abdullah as the BN candidate for the Wangsa Maju parliamentary seat.
The media also reported that Wanita Umno chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil would contest the Bandar Tun Razak parliamentary seat in the coming general election. — Bernama
