RTD officer seriously injured after irate lorry driver tips over truck

KLANG: A Road Transport Department (RTD) officer was injured when an irate lorry driver he was escorting recklessly drove his overloaded lorry before crashing it at Jalan Kapar-Klang here last week.
On Wednesday at about 4pm, three RTD officers on routine patrols had flagged down a tipper lorry laden with gravel on suspicion of overloading.
On pulling over, the lorry driver jumped out of his vehicle and attempted to escape the scene.
When the RTD officers tried stop him, the driver who is in his 30's put up a fight.
An RTD officer suffered minor injuries in the struggle.
It is learnt that two passing police detectives who saw the commotion went to the scene and it was only then did the lorry driver give himself up.
After taking down the driver's particulars, an RTD officer ordered him to drive the tipper lorry to the North Klang police station.
To ensure the man does not escape, the officer followed the driver in the lorry.
During the journey, the furious suspect began driving his lorry recklessly by sharply swerving and veering the vehicle in zig-zag despite being ordered to stop doing so by the officer.
Moments later, the driver lost control of the lorry causing it to tip over on its side in the middle of the road.
With tonnes of gravel scattered on the ground and traffic coming to a standstill, passing motorists pulled out the RTD officer and the lorry driver out of the vehicle.
Both men suffered serious injuries and ambulances arrived the scene minutes later before sending them to a hospital where they were warded.
North Klang police chief ACP Mazelan Paijan who confirmed the case told theSun the lorry driver is being investigated for obstructing a civil servant from discharging his duties under Section 186 of the Penal Code.
