PETALING JAYA: Incumbent Bukit Gasing assemblyman R. Rajiv will not contest as an independent candidate in the upcoming general election should he not be nominated by DAP to defend his seat.
The first-term assemblyman then stressed that he is a party man and that he will respect and support whatever decision the party makes about his state seat.
"For now, it is still unknown whether I will be defending my seat or the party will be fielding someone else for it.
"However, I will respect and support it 100%. And also I will not contest as an independent candidate should I not be nominated for the seat," Rajiv said in a press conference after a brief walkabout session at Jalan 17/10 here.
In the press conference, Rajiv also rubbished claims that Petaling Jaya city councillor Terence Tan would be contesting for the Bukit Gasing seat.
"I know Tan very well and he has spoken to me personally that he has no intention to contest in the upcoming election, so the report about him contesting for Bukit Gasing is untrue and unfounded," Rajiv said.
On the walkabout, Rajiv said it was meant to create some awareness and to educate the voters in the neighbourhood that DAP will be contesting in the upcoming election under the PKR logo instead of its iconic rocket.
He added that although many of the voters are not aware of the changes, most of them are able to accept the change.
"So far, most of the people that we have met are aware of the changes, only a small number are not aware and it's mostly due to them not paying close attention to political news.
"However, based on the response we got so far, there wasn't much objection towards the decision," he said.
