PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong has warned the DAP candidate who is running for the Teluk Intan seat not to let the upcoming general election spoil the harmony among the people of the constituency.
"Whoever is in the running for the seat in Teluk Intan, I hope their presence will not divide and disrupt the harmony in this city," he said in a statement today.
On Monday night, PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail announced the candidacy of Perak DAP chairman Nga Kor Ming for the Teluk Intan parliamentary seat.
"Progress and harmony in this city should be maintained. Do not make it a situation where families and neighbourhoods become enemies and do not respect each other," said Mah who is also Gerakan president.
Mah said that he is not berating or looking down on any DAP candidate but advised that although elections are held once every five years, the winning candidate needs to work for and take care of the city everyday for the next five years.
"The people of Teluk Intan know who is doing work, serving and fulfilling promises in the area. They will make their choice. I have been serving and working hard in Teluk Intan, I believe the rakyat will choose rationally based on the candidates' record," he said.
He added that Teluk Intan is in the midst of transformation due to many of their initiatives.
"This is not going to be an easy fight, but we will work hard in a short period of time to secure the seat. Gerakan, together with other Barisan Nasional component parties will fiercely compete for this seat," he said.
In the 2014 by-election, Mah had secured the Teluk Intan seat by a narrow margin of 238 votes, against DAP's Dyana Sofia Mohd Daud following the death of its wakil rakyat Seah Leong Peng from cancer.
