Viral bully video: Nine secondary school students detained

SHAH ALAM: Police have detained nine suspects in relation to a viral video clip which showed several secondary students allegedly beating up another student to "celebrate" his birthday.
Selangor Criminal Investigation Department chief SAC Fadzil Ahmat said following the incident, police detained nine 17-year-old students at about 11.30am at a school located here yesterday.
"The teenagers were all Form Five students and they were boys," he said.
Upon questioning, the students allegedly involved in the incident were released at 4.45pm under police bail the same day.
He said the investigation paper on the incident will be referred to the state public prosecutor soon.
Earlier yesterday, it was reported that the victim in the video clip had lodged a police report relating to the incident.
Fadzil said the 17-year-old victim showed up at the district police headquarters here and lodged a report on Sunday.
"The incident took place on Feb 8. We had initiated a detailed investigation way before he lodged the report. The victim, however, lodged a police report at 9pm on Sunday," he said yesterday.
Fadzil said police are investigating the matter under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting.
It is understood the school in Shah Alam has identified all the students involved and they will conduct an investigation too.
The 30-second video, which went viral online, depicts eight students singing Happy Birthday The Education Ministry meanwhile had said it is investigating the incident.
Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan said such an incident should not happen for whatever reason or purpose.
