KUALA LUMPUR: Irked by banners of a political party being displayed in their township before nomination day, three women took it upon themselves to bring them down today.
The women, all three of whom are residents of Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) here, had removed dozens of Barisan Nasional banners, claiming their complaints to City Hall on the matter had fallen on deaf ears.
The women snipped off the banners, placed them in bags and took them to the TTDI police station to hand them over to the police.
However, their efforts backfired when police initiated an investigation on them instead.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said today that police seized 133 Barisan Nasional banners of various sizes upon checking two vehicles used by the women. Also found in the cars were a pair of scissors, pliers, a wire cutter, a torchlight, a bottle of mosquito repellent and a dustbin cover.
He said a man who witnessed the women committing the act at Jalan Leong Yew Koh in TTDI contacted police.
Mazlan said investigations revealed that the women did not belong to any political party and had acted on removing the banners as concerned residents of TTDI.
"The women were also not compelled to do this by any party and did it voluntarily. They also claimed they resorted to removing the banners themselves as there was no action taken by the local council on their complaints of the banners being displayed before nomination day.
"We urge the public to report issues like this to their local council and not take matter into their own hands," he said.
Mazlan added that the case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief and causing damage.
It is believed that the women have been freed on bail.
