GE14: Bright prospects for BN to wrest Sepang seat

SEPANG: Sepang Umno division is confident that prospects are bright for the Barisan Nasional (BN) to wrest the parliamentary seat here and two state seats from the opposition.
Its chief, Datuk Marsum Paing, said the sentiment of the local community indicated that the support had shifted to BN following various ongoing programmes for the people implemented by the party since 2016.
He also said the coalition was deemed to have advantage in the three-cornered fight, which was expected in the Sepang parliamentary constituency, as well as the Tanjong Sepat, Sungai Pelek and Dengkil state constituencies in the 14th General Election (GE14).
"We do not look at the three-cornered fight in our courses and training for the election machinery. Instead, we focus on one-on-one fight.
"However, when there is a division among them (opposition), they formed a pact which excluded PAS. This means we will face a three-cornered fight. If we feel that we can win one-on-one, what more a three-cornered fight," he told Bernama here recently.
In the GE13, Mohamed Hanipa Maidin of PAS (now with Parti Amanah Negara) won the Sepang parliamentary seat with a majority of 1,104 votes against Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohamed (BN), who garnered 35,670 votes.
For the Tanjong Sepat state seat, Nisman Yusof (BN) lost to Mohd Haslin Hassan of PAS with a majority of 682 votes, while in the Sungai Pelek state seat, DAP's Lai Nyuk Lan squared off Ng Chok Sin of BN with a majority of 1,972 votes.
BN only managed to retain the Dengkil state seat via Shahrum Mohd Sharif who won with a majority of 2,317 votes against Borhan Aman Shah of PKR.
As for the GE14, Marsum said the Sepang parliamentary seat would have 51 district polling centres, in which 37 of them would be under Umno and the rest for other BN component parties.
Selangor Umno had also mobilised the election machinery in every division, including Sepang, since 2016 through various courses, training and simulation exercise to ensure a smooth process during GE14, he said. — Bernama
