KUALA LUMPUR: Police are on the hunt for a snatch thief following an attack on a Taiwanese tourist, who is in critical condition at Hospital Kuala Lumpur, following a failed attempted theft on Wednesday.
In the 11.50am incident, the 55-year-old woman was making her way to the National Mosque from the Islamic Cultural Museum, when she was suddenly approached by a motorcyclist from behind. The biker tried to snatch her bag, but failed as his attempt caused the victim to fall over.
She subsequently struck her head against the concrete of the pedestrian walk and the suspect fled the scene.
The woman is currently unconscious and in critical condition while attached to a ventilator life support machine. She suffered a 4cm cut on her head following the botched theft and is expected to undergo an X-ray and a CT-scan.
The victim had entered Malaysia on Sunday for a holiday, checking into a hotel along Jalan Hang Kasturi.
Dang Wangi district police chief ACP Shaharuddin Abdullah, who confirmed the incident, said no suspects have been arrested so far.
Forensic personnel are currently trying to identify the suspect through the closed-circuit television camera (CCTV) recordings in the vicinity of the crime scene.
