GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government's candidates for the 14th general elections have hit the ground running even before the campaigning period has begun.
Leading the campaign trail at the Pulau Tikus market this morning, Chief Minister and Air Putih incumbent Lim Guan Eng was accompanied by his cadre, Tanjung Bungah candidate Zairil Khir Johari, Pulau Tikus candidate Chris Lee Chun Kit. and Bukit Bendera candidate Wong Hon Wai.
They started their walkabout and were well-received by the majority of the people at the market.
Market-goers took the opportunity to take photographs with them.
A party member, when met, said it is important to gather feedback from the grassroots and to listen to the people's grouses.
At a press conference later, Lim said the response from the people was very encouraging.
He said they chose Pulau Tikus to begin their campaign as the place is located in the centre of the Bukit Bendera parliamentary constituency.
Although the odds are heavily in favour of the DAP in the state, Lim said they cannot take things for granted and must work harder.
"All the candidates for each constituency need to continue their hard work," he said.
He addressed traffic congestion as a major issue plaguing the state, acknowledging the deadlock as politicians from both sides of the political divide remain at loggerheads. He added it is imperative the state has a proper public transportation system.
In Pulau Tikus, Lee is expected to face state Gerakan Youth Chief Jason Loo, as the latter has been very active in the constituency.
So far, Penang DAP has only revealed the state seat candidates and two parliamentary candidates for the elections.
Further announcements will be made in stages before nomination day next Saturday.
