Pacquiao won’t run from Matthysse

KUALA LUMPUR: It has been 43 years since Malaysia last hosted an electrifying boxing showdown. In 1975, the greatest boxer of all time, Muhammad Ali was in Malaysia for his bout against European champion Joe Bugner.

Four Decades on, Malaysia is going to witness yet another Fight of Champions.

This time, Manny Pacquiao, the Pride Of The Philippines will be having a go at the current WBA Welterweight Champion Lucas Matthysse.

The eagerly awaited fight will be held at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil at 10am on 15 July 2018.

"I am so thankful for everyone from the local and international media that came here today," said Pacquiao as he took the stage as Chairman of MP Promotions, the promoter of this epic battle.

Pacquiao and his MP Promotions company is hoping to equal if not surpass the expectations leading up to the epic Ali-Bugner match.

"This is the kickoff for MP promotions to start promoting international events. The purpose is also to give chance to our Asian boxers to excel on the world stage," he said, stating that this is the first fight that MP Promotions is organising outside the Philippines.

"I am now talking to you as a promoter. This Championship is very important, not only for MP Promotions but for other boxers who have the talent to excel and show their talent to the world."

Matthysse is a 35-year-old champion nicknamed "La Maquina," who has displayed machine-like precision in beating 39 opponents, 36 of whom he knocked out--an amazing 92.3% demolition rate. He has lost four times only, but Pacquiao remained positive.

"If you are a boxing fan you want to witness this fight. You want a fight like there is no tomorrow. You want more action in the ring, more exchange of punches in the ring.

"This match between myself (Pacquiao) and Matthysse on July 15 will be watched all around the world because of our nature of being aggressive boxers. We don't want to just play and make money.

"I know the capability of my opponent. He wants to be on top of his game and if my stamina is not 100% it is better to back off and don't fight.

"I am not in the ring to run away from my opponent,” he said, probably referring to his fight against Floyd Mayweather in 2016.

"I want to make sure in this fight, whatever the circumstances in the ring we can compete by changing punches in the ring so that our fans would love to watch it. Matthysse will come prepared for this fight, and you can assure I am going to do the same too."
