Ringgit opens easier against US dollar

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened easier against the US dollar today on a lack of market demand, a dealer said.
At 9.01am, the local unit was quoted at 3.8900/8950 from 3.8890/8920 recorded at Thursday's close.
The dealer said Asian currencies continued to trade on mixed themes, but the ringgit remained exceptionally muted due to the building election risks.
"But with currency markets, including the G-10 mired in sideways activity, it's unlikely we will see any significant shift in the local note today," he added.
Meanwhile, another dealer said Asian currencies, including the ringgit may trade higher supported by the higher commodity prices.
"Besides the higher aluminium price, crude oil is also helping to provide support for the ringgit," he added.
The ringgit traded higher against a basket of major currencies.
Against the Singapore dollar, it rose to 2.9627/9683 from 2.9694/9728 and appreciated versus the yen to 3.6203/6260 from 3.6214/6252.
The ringgit improved to 5.4787/4861 from 5.5204/5263 vis-a-vis the British pound and advanced to 4.8026/8095 from 4.8103/8144 when compared with the euro. — Bernama
