PUTRAJAYA: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah (pix) said the palace will remain neutral in matters related to the upcoming 14th general election (GE14).
In a statement issued by the Selangor palace, today, Sultan Sharafuddin stated that the palace and himself have always been neutral and have never taken sides with any political party in the country.
"I am not connected in any way to any form of political rivalry and will not interfere in political matters within the state or in the country," said Sultan Sharafuddin in a statement signed off by his private secretary Datuk Munir Bani.
The state ruler stressed that his position was always above politics and should never be perceived as being in support of any political party.
"I always believe and respect the people's power to elect leaders who are suitable to represent them, in line with the country's parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy.
"I would like to remind all citizens, especially in Selangor, not to create issues which can give rise to infighting and disturbance during the election period," said the ruler.
Sultan Sharafuddin also expressed hope that GE14 will be conducted smoothly without any incidences and chaos by the people.
The sultan's statement came in response to a fake news story currently going viral on social media which purportedly stated that Sultan Sharafuddin had called on the people to reject both Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan in the coming polls.
