KUALA LUMPUR: A joint memorandum between a coalition of six social activist groups was handed over to the Malaysian Human rights Commission (Suhakam) today in which they highlighted an array of concerns they have about the upcoming 14the general election (GE14).
The group of six consist of G25 Malaysia, HAKAM, Bersih 2.0, IKRAM, ABIM and the Centre to combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4).
In the memorandum, the highlighted concerns such as postal voting, advance voting, issues with the electoral roll, exploiting racial and religious issues during campaigning, the use of certain laws to stifle freedom of expression and the safe conduct of the election during the campaign period and polling day.
The memorandum requests that Suhakam have an enquiry immediately after the conclusion of GE14.
"We believe that a public inquiry is necessary to determine whether or not there were serious flaws in the electoral system and the conduct of the elections which violated the constitutional rights of citizens to vote and choose their government," read the memorandum.
Suhakam Commissioner Datuk Mah Weng Kwai received the memorandum and said that they had discussed monitoring the election in a board meeting recently.
"We will send out some 50 staff and volunteers to monitor the election process three days prior and one day after the election, our officers will have to fill in report forms daily and communicate to us what is happening at the voting stations," he said at the memorandum handover today.
