Mat Sabu to stand in Kota Raja (Updated)

SHAH ALAM: Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) president Mohamad Sabu will contest the Kota Raja parliamentary seat in the 14th general election, the party confirmed today.
Mohamad, popularly known as Mat Sabu, said the decision for him to contest in Kota Raja was made following a recommendation from his party.
"It is not known whether the seat is safe or not. Sometimes a safe seat can turn the other way around," he told a press conference at the announcement of Amanah Selangor election candidates at the party's state headquarters.
Mat Sabu served as the parliamentarian for Kuala Kedah after winning the seat in the 1999 General Election. In 2004, he lost to Barisan Nasional's Datuk Hashim Jahaya.
Mat Sabu tried to make a comeback in the 2008 and 2013 General Elections in Kuala Terengganu and Pendang respectively, but failed on both occasions.
Amanah, a splinter party of PAS, stated that it would be contesting a total of five parliamentary and 10 state seats in Selangor.
In making way for Mat Sabu, incumbent Kota Raja MP Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud will be fielded as a candidate in the Seri Serdang state seat.
With the exception of Siti Mariah, all four Amanah elected parliamentary and state representatives in Selangor will be defending their respective seats.
They are incumbent Shah Alam MP Khalid Abd Samad, Mohamed Hanipa Maidin (incumbent Sepang MP), Saari Sungib (incumbent Hulu Kelang assemblyman) and Hasnul Baharuddin (incumbent Morib assemblyman).
All of Amanah's incumbent representatives won their seats under PAS in the previous General Election.
They were among the disgruntled PAS members who decided to leave the Islamist party to form Amanah in 2015.
