KUALA LUMPUR: MCA Wangsa Maju parliamentary candidate Datuk Seri Yew Teong Look has said his long and positive relationship with Malay voters in the constituency would put him in good stead to win.
Yew was responding to reports that a number NGOs, including Chinese groups, have threatened to boycott the elections and not vote for BN if Umno Wangsa Maju chief Datuk Seri Mohd Shafei Abdullah was not fielded, and a candidate from MCA was fielded instead.
"(Claims by some voters that they will reject MCA) are just emotional reaction, it can be resolved through the spirit of Barisan Nasional (BN)," Yew said today after he was named as the BN candidate.
"Our relationship in Wangsa Maju is quite strong, and I have been there for quite some time. I just need to strengthen this relationship further to win more Malay votes."
Mohd Shafei had contested the seat in GE13, but lost to PKR's Datuk Tan Kee Kwong by 5,511 votes.
Yew was BN's candidate for the 2004 and 2008 elections, winning the first but losing the second.
Wangsa Maju is a Malay majority seat, making up over 60% of the overall constituents, with Chinese voters only amounting to slightly more than 20%.
Yew said he hoped all quarters would accept BN's decision to field him in place of Umno's Mohd Shafie, noting that he was also dropped as a candidate in the previous elections.
"A decision has been made. I really hope all component parties will cooperate. I experienced the same situation last time, but as human beings, all these problems can be resolved," he stated.
