Palestinian lecturer's foreign media focus

KUALA LUMPUR: The murder of a Palestinian lecturer who was shot near a condominium in Jalan Meranti, Setapak here early yesterday, has become the focus of media practitioners, including foreign news agencies from the Middle East.
The incident where the 35-year-old was shot by one of two men on a high-powered motorcycle as the victim was walking to the Surau Medan Idaman for the dawn prayers, has rattled the local community.
Upon receiving information on the news, dozens of media practitioners comprising journalists, photographers and cameramen gathered at the scene to get the latest information on the incident from various parties, including the police.
As of 6pm yesterday, the police had yet to disclose the identity of the victim.
Palestinian Ambassador to Malaysia, Datuk Dr Anwar H. Al Agha, who revealed to the media that the victim's identity was Dr Fadi Al Batsh, was at the scene to see the location of the murder, along with Kuala Lumpur police chief, Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim.
Attempts by local journalists to interview the victim's wife, who lived on the 11th floor of the condominium with the couple's three children aged one, five and six, turned futile as they were barred by security guards from entering the compound.
The police, including Wangsa Maju police chief, Supt Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif were spotted at the scene of the murder until late this afternoon.
Bernama learnt that the post-mortem would be conducted at the Selayang Hospital tomorrow morning.
Fadi obtained his doctorate in engineering at Universiti Malaya before taking up the post of lecturer at a private university. He was also an imam at the surau.
Meanwhile, Universiti Kuala Lumpur British Malaysian Institute (UNIKL BMI) Human Capital Unit head, Arafiah Aman said Fadi's remains would be sent to the Surau Medan Idaman for funeral prayers after the post-mortem.
"The body will then be buried at the Batu Muda Muslim Cemetery," he said when contacted by Bernama here. — Bernama
