BUKIT MERTAJAM: PKR has called on the Federal Court to revisit the evidence linked to the 2014 imprisoning of party founder Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on grounds of engaging in sodomy (committing carnal intercourse against the course of nature).
The party also called for the setting up of a criminal review commission to probe a possible miscarriage of justice in this particular case.
In a joint statement issued by Free Anwar Movement coordinator Yusmadi Yusoff and PKR vice president Nurul Izzah Anwar, the duo cited recent findings by UK-based Queens' Counsel Justice David Bentley, an experienced criminal defense specialist.
Bentley has highlighted major questions and even alluded to possible tampering allegations, the duo stressed.
"Thus, we urge the case to be revisited and deliberated based on the latest developments. We demand that the (caretaker) Home Minister (Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi), who has the ultimate inherent powers to order for the re-testing of the DNA evidence submitted against the wrongful conviction of Anwar."
The duo said that their requests were based on transparent findings which had reported significant breaches and questionable results which were based on Bentley's evaluation of the 22 volumes of the Record of Appeals from the Federal Court on this case.
Following the review, some new and compelling arguments can be put forward – calling into question the reliability or integrity of the DNA evidence.
"The Federal Court should entertain a further review within its inherent power to prevent injustice or an abuse of the court process."
