ALOR STAR: In a last-minute twist Kedah Barisan Nasional (BN) today announced Datuk Nawawi Ahmad, the Langkawi Umno chief, as the candidate for the Langkawi parliamentary seat.
The announcement was made by caretaker Kedah BN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah at his official residence in Seri Mentaloon near here.
The announcement will see Nawawi defend his parliamentary constituency against former premier and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad and also another possible candidate from Gagasan Sejahtera.
Prior to the announcement Syariah accredited lawyer and former state executive councillor Datuk Md Rawi Md Hamid was said to have been picked by the leadership to contest in the parliament seat in the upcoming GE14.
The Langkawi-born politician will, however, defend his state seat in Ayer Hangat which he won in the 2008 and 2004 general election.
The announcement of the candidates saw 18 new faces nominated for 15 state seats and three parliamentary constituencies.
In his speech, Ahmad Bashah said all the candidates nominated to contest must work together to ensure victory in Kedah and called on BN supporters to support the chosen candidates.
