ReLEx, SMILE

More than 50% of the Malaysian population are affected by refractive error, a condition where one’s eyes are unable to focus light properly which causes blurred vision. This condition has resulted in many observing a bespectacled lifestyle due to near-sightedness, far-sightedness or astigmatism.
Whether using spectacles or contact lenses to correct the problem, some Malaysians prefer to live a life free of these to have ease in enjoying various physical activities minus the hassle. Such is possible with Lasik and ReLEx SMILE procedures at the Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital (Thoneh).
Dr Muiz Mahyudin is one of the Thoneh’s specialists who conducts Lasik and ReLEx SMILE procedures to correct refractive errors.
To undergo this procedure, patients need to be at least 20 years old. The procedure is reported to be bladeless, flapless and painless although it involves making a small incision at the side of the cornea, followed by extraction of a lenticule layer.
“The ReLEx SMILE procedure is about reshaping the cornea to enable the light that enters the eye to be properly focused onto the retina for clearer vision. It can be completed between two to 30 minutes. Normally, the patient will be able to see its effects shortly after that,” said Muiz.
According to Muiz, an assessment is first conducted to ensure that the patient’s eyes are suitable for the procedure. “Our comprehensive tests check the patient’s eye health, especially the retina, the crystalline lens, and especially the shape and thickness of the cornea. We take pride in being very thorough in our assessment,” the doctor informed.
“The main advantage of ReLEx SMILE compared to LASIK is that it doesn’t require creating a corneal flap and this automatically reduces the risk of affecting the corneal nerves, important in controlling the production of tears. Besides, the healing process for ReLEx SMILE is also shorter, and the risk of common side effects such as ‘dry eye’ are minimised,” Muiz said.
Aftercare is equally important, hence, follow-up check-ups with specialists at the Thoneh is advised. This helps in monitoring the patient’s progress and avoiding complications. Visit www.thoneh.com for more information.
