Malacca hotel offers free rooms for returning voters

KUALA LUMPUR: The Rosa Malacca Hotel is offering free rooms for voters returning to Malacca for the 14th General Election (GE14) in its move to encourage more Malaysians to come home and vote.
Its executive director Sharavana Kumar Balakrisnen said the hotel was providing 60 rooms for free, which could accommodate about 130 people with check in on May 8 and check out on May 9, and currently 50% had been filled up.
"Only the room is free, and those eligible must have an identity card with a Malacca address on it, and must be registered voters. They also need to provide proof that they are working outside Malacca, and a registered voter," he told Bernama here today.
He said the hotel which is situated at Jalan Parameswara, had made the offer since last Friday.
"We feel that it will be difficult for those working outside the state, especially those in Singapore, Johor and other cities, to make a day trip just to vote.
"Furthermore, since it is a public holiday, the hotel rate will be expensive, so that is how the idea was mooted, and turned into the hotel's corporate social responsibility which will encourage people to come back to vote," he said.
On the strict regulations imposed, he said it was to ensure the offer was not being abused.
