PETALING JAYA: Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) will stand by its decision to field incumbent Sungai Siput lawmaker Dr Michael Jeyakumar for the 14th General Election.
In a statement today, PSM secretary-general A. Sivarajan said the decision was made following discussions with Jeyakumar and the party branch in Sungai Siput.
"We are happy to confirm that PSM will to continue to defend Sg Siput and Dr Jeyakumar will stand in PRU14 under the PSM flag," he said.
Sivarajan slammed Pakatan Harapan saying that the Opposition coalition has wrongly labelled them as spoilers when it is the other way round.
"It's PKR who are planning a three-cornered fight against the two-term incumbent. Because of PKR 's ego, they are so adamant to put in a candidate to break the votes when Jeyakumar refused to run under the PKR logo," he said.
Sivarajan stressed that PSM remains confident of the support by Sungai Siput constituents whom he believes want Jeyakumar to continue to serve as their MP.
"We are confident that Jeyakumar (contesting) with the PSM logo will win against MIC's Datuk S.K Devamany, if PKR does not (force us) into a three-cornered fight."
He added that Pakatan Harapan will lose the respect of the people if they decide to bring down an MP who has served extremely well in Sungai Siput and in Parliament.
PSM's response came after reports that Jeyakumar would consider standing down from the Sungai Siput parliamentary seat in view of the greater good of the Opposition's cause amidst concerns raised by the party's branch members over multi-cornered fights involving BN, Pakatan Harapan and PAS.
