College student dies after lorry rams into two vehicles on highway shoulder

TAIPING: A college student was killed after a lorry rammed into two vehicles, including a police patrol car, parked on the shoulder of the North-South Expressway near here today.
Two police corporals also suffered broken legs in the crash.
In the 8.30am incident, 21-year-old Muhammad Hakeem Badrol Hisham from Semanggol, stopped at the emergency lane at Km223 along the highway after his vehicle's tyre suffered a puncture.
Three policemen, who were on patrol duty, stopped to provide assistance to Muhammad Hakeem.
A lorry suddenly knocked into both of their vehicles.
The police vehicle, which was parked behind the car, was dragged for about 70m, while the other car skidded to the middle of the expressway.
Muhammad Hakeem died on the spot due to severe injuries, while the two police personnel were rushed to the Taiping Hospital.
It is learnt that the 29-year-old driver of the police patrol car broke his left leg, while another 47-year-old personnel broke his right leg.
The third policeman in the patrol car did not sustain any injury.
Teams from the Highway Investigation Unit (USLR) and Fire and Rescue Department were dispatched to the scene immediately to facilitate the situation and ease traffic congestion.
The 35-year-old lorry driver from Kulim in Kedah escaped unhurt but was picked up by the police to assist in investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
