JOHOR BARU: Johor Barisan Nasional (BN) chief Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said he chose to contest a parliamentary seat in addition to defending his state seat, as he wants the voice of Johor to be heard by the federal government.
Mohamed Khaled had previously confirmed he would contest the Pasir Gudang parliamentary seat and defend his Permas state seat.
By doing so, he had broken the norm of previous Johor mentris besar who had only contested state seats.
"I want the federal government to look at our direction and the way we are moving forward and understand Johor's aspirations," he said after launching the Takaful protection scheme for the people of Johor at Pusat Islam Iskandar, here today.
On the question of his position as mentri besar, he said he would rather focus on winning the general election.
"It is all decided by the top leadership and the Johor ruler," he added.
Earlier, Johor Pakatan Harapan (PH) chief Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Mohamed Khaled's decision to contest two seats revealed that his political career was shaky.
Mohamed Khaled however refuted the allegation.
"As state BN chief, I want to lead a strong Johor team," he said.
He also denied that there will be changes in the state's candidate list that was announced on Monday.
"I do not have any new appointment letter for candidates signed by BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak."
