BENTONG: The independent candidate for Sabai state seat has chosen the fish for his logo in the 14th general election (GE14) as he believes the symbol bodes good luck.
T. Karunaneethi, 64, said according to his religious belief and his birth date which falls on June 25 1954, the fish is considered auspicious which could bring immense luck.
The former MIC Karak division vice-chairman said he decided to contest because he wanted to continue serving the people after he was allegedly sacked by the party in 2015.
"I can speak in four languages, namely Malay, English and Cantonese and Tamil which can work to my advantage in winning the hearts of voters," he told reporters when met at the nomination centre at Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Silver Jubilee Hall here today.
Karunaneethi, who is no stranger to Bentong residents said, he was confident that he would have no problems in the constituency as he had served as Bentong municipal councillor before.
In this 14th General Election, Karunaneethi will face BN's Datuk R. Goonasakaren who is also Pahang MIC chairman, D. R. Kamache (PKR) and Mohd Khairuddin Abdullah (PAS).
Meanwhile, the contest for the Pelangai state seat will see a three-cornered fight among three former teachers including Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob who was a teacher at Sekolah Menengah Agama Pelangai before leaving the profession in 1985, to become a full-time politician.
Adnan will face PAS' Zaharim Osman, 61, who is his distant relative and formerly an English teacher at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Chemomoi, here.
Another retired teacher contesting in the Pelangai state seat is PKR's candidate from Amanah, Norhaizan Abu Hassan, 59, who hails from Kampung Bukit Gajah, Simpang Pelangai here. — Bernama
