KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said contesting candidates or agents will be allowed to hold political talks throughout the GE14 campaign as long they adhere to the law.
"Under Section 24B(3) of the Election Offences Act 1954, contesting candidates or agents will be allowed to hold political talks throughout the GE14 campaign period in their contesting areas as long as they inform the police.
"Non-contesting politicians who are campaigning for the particular politicians will have to be listed in the permit that was applied under Election Offences Act 1954," he told reporters at Bukit Aman police headquarters today.
However, Mohamad Fuzi stressed that any individuals who plan to hold an assembly must issue a notice under Section 9(1) Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
"The assembly notice should be submitted within 10 days prior to the gathering," he added.
He stressed that it is wrong to say that the police created new rules as claimed by some irresponsible parties.
Meanwhile, Mohamad Fuzi said the nomination process for the GE14 today went smoothly nationwide without any untoward incidents or provocations from political party supporters.
He said all party supporters present to support their candidates at the candidate nomination centres adhered to the orders outlined by the police and the Election Commission (EC).
"So far we see that the security level was smooth, no tension and this is a positive sign. There was no serious issue during the nomination process, police will continue to beef up security until the GE14 is over," he added.
