Mahathir in three-way fight for Langkawi

LANGKAWI: Former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will begin his parliamentary comeback at the age of 92 against two-term incumbent Datuk Nawawi Ahmad from Barisan Nasional (BN) after the Election Commission (EC) announced their candidacies here today.
The Alor Star-born former prime minister will also face the Langkawi PAS area head Zubir Ahmad in a three-cornered contest.
This is the first time that the Langkawi parliamentary seat will have a multi-cornered fight since it broke away from the Jerlun parliament seat in 1995.
The seat was previously held by Datuk Abu Bakar Taib until 2008 when it handed it over to Nawawi, who is now also the Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) chairman.
Returning Officer Mohammad Arof Darus make the announcement.
Mahathir's running mate Datuk Juhari Bulat, who is contesting the Air Hangat state seat, will be up against the incumbent Datuk Md Rawi Abdul Hamid from BN and local candidate Azlina Azinan from PAS.
As for the Kuah state seat, the incumbent Nor Saidi Nayan (BN) will face Mazlan Ahmad from PAS, Mohamad Ratu Mansor, a fishermen standing as an Independent and Mohammad Firdaus Ahmad from Mahathir's party, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM).
