International Conference on Manual Therapy

30 Apr 2018 / 14:23 H.

MAHSA University's physiotherapy department is organising the country's first International Conference on Manual Therapy from May 3 to 7 at its Saujana Putra Campus.
For those who didn't know, manual therapy forms the main scope of practice in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and its clinical outcomes depend on strong evidence and clinical reasoning.
It is one of the specialised "hands-on' techniques" to reduce pain and improve a patient's functional ability.
Physiotherapists had greatly contributed to the development of manual therapy approaches and techniques, hence, this conference would be ideal for those involved in this area, including educationists, practitioners and physicians across the medical field.
Associate Prof Chan Sook Chin, who is both organising committee chairperson and Mahsa University Faculty of Health and Sport Sciences' dean states that the aim of the conference is to share up-to-date information and knowledge; new skills of physiotherapists in manual therapy; and to emphasise the importance of evidence-based practice in the management of musculoskeletal pain and disability. It also attempts to bridge the lacunae with eminent speakers on advance Maitland techniques, motor control in manual therapy, other manual approaches, as well as the implications of pain.

Attendees can expect a packed five-day programme that comprises two keynote addresses, four plenary sessions, four symposiums and eight free paper presentations. There will also be two pre-conference workshops on manual therapy techniques and a post-conference workshop on pain.
The line-up of speakers include:
Dr Steve Milanese - International Center for Allied Health Evidence director, Sansom Institute director and the University of South Australia Health Sciences programme director who has authored over 60 peer-reviewed publications in the areas of ergonomics, evidence-based practice, manual therapy and health care.
Prof Dr Helen Slater - A clinical researcher from Curtin University and dedicated enthusiast in the field of musculoskeletal pain, who is recognised both nationally and internationally across government sectors, professional bodies, health industries, consumer bodies and not-for-pro?t organisations.
