PETALING JAYA: Voters should applaud PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar's efforts in raising the people's issues in Parliament, Pakatan Harapan's Lembah Pantai candidate Fahmi Fadzil (pix) said today.
Fahmi stressed that raising the people's plight is the most important duty of a federal lawmaker.
"For instance, two years ago Nurul Izzah brought up malnutrition issues in People's Housing Projects (PPR) and they were brushed off in Parliament until a Unicef report was published recently and brought the issue to light," he told a media conference at Keadilan Headquarters here today.
"She had always debated about people's issue instead of getting involved with law-related debate. What did the Umno-Barisan Nasional (BN) ministers do? Nothing, except claiming that the Unicef report was wrong and denying the facts.
"So if Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datuk Seri Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin unable to explain on the failure to execute the good plans for the Lembah Pantai people, then people can start reviewing Umno."
Fahmi said Nurul Izzah could have contributed even more during her two terms if an opposition MP and agencies such as City Hall (DBKL) had a good working rapport and had she received the allocations she was entitled to from the federal government.
On other matter, having visited PPR residents door-to-door in Lembah Pantai, for Fahmi the concept of crowdsourcing and crowdfunding would bring a lot of benefits to those who need such platforms.
"In one area, you have Bangsar, which is a generally a well-to-do area. This is how we can connect resources from the area to contribute to those who are in need within the constituency.
"There is also a need to preserve our history and heritage in KL. Many have lamented over the loss of the name Kerinchi to Bangsar South and Abdullah Hukum to KL Eco City. I am not against development, in fact, I acknowledge it but we have to find a way to either incorporate or commemorate the past."
Fahmi will take on Umno Lembah Pantai division chief Raja Nong Chik and PAS' Fauzi Abu Bakar in a three-cornered fight.
In the last general election, Nurul Izzah defeated Raja Nong Chik and independent candidate Rusli Baba by 1,847 votes.
