KANGAR: Perlis Barisan Nasional (BN) has pledged to build more affordable houses and help to solve housing issues especially among young people, if it is given the mandate to continue governing the state.
Behor Lalang Village Security and Development Committee chairman, Zainab Sabu said as the closest community leader to the grassroots, she often received complaints from people who could not afford to own houses.
"Many can't afford to own a house due to high price, and without owning a piece of land themselves, they end up living in rental properties.
"However, following the recent announcement by state BN chairman Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim that the state BN manifesto pledges to build 1,000 housing units under the People's Housing Project (PPR), has given new hopes to the people," she told Bernama here today.
She said BN's pledge to implement the Perumahan Rakyat 1Malaysia (PR1MA) in every parliamentary constituency was another excellent piece of news as the people did not have to move far from their hometown to own a house.
Graphic designer Hanis Khamis, 36, felt that Perlis was facing very critical housing issue given its limited supply as well as the high price compared to other states in the northern region.
"Some have to buy houses outside Perlis like Kedah, so hopefully with the announcement of additional housing projects under the state government in Perlis, it will give the people a better chance to own houses," she said.
Meanwhile, a PR1MA home buyer in Padang Siding, Arau near here, Lee Pow Sin, 30, said owning a house through the state government programme proved to be very beneficial to her and her family.
"I applaud the government's initiative to build more PR1MA houses because buyers will pay less compared to buying from ordinary developers," she said.
Lee, a private sector employee, said that under the PR1MA project she was able to have a comfortable single-storey terrace house for RM195,000. — Bernama
