YONG PENG: The individual who was caught on camera pushing a 77-year-old off a Barisan Nasional (BN) ceramah stage here is "100%" confirmed to be a Pakatan Harapan supporter, MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong claimed.
Wee, is who is the BN's Ayer Hitam candidate, stated that he knew the identity as well as the detailed background of the man.
"100% (the man is a PH supporter). We also know his identity. He is from Kangkar Baru," he said, referring to a residential area near here.
"We know where he works and as what. Yong Peng is not a big area," he told a press conference at his community service centre here.
Septuagenarian Tan Hong Hi, a BN supporter, was pushed off the stage on Monday night after an altercation with a man in an event in Dataran Yong Peng.
It is believed that the incident occurred following a misunderstanding between Tan and a group of supporters after Tan was believed to have taken down a PKR flag on the ceramah stage.
Wee said Tan had suffered broken ribs due to the impact from the fall and was currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
Urging opposition supporters to be more disciplined in their campaigning, Wee expressed his disappointment on the spread of "budaya samseng" (hooliganism) in the constituency.
Wee also did not rule out the possibility that the incident was deliberately planned by his opponent to disrupt his campaign.
He also said he was saddened by comments made by netizens for trying to put the blame on the old man for inciting the incident.
"Some even said 'padan muka' (serves him right). There were also those who said that he was the one who had started the provocation.
"Where is our feeling of love? Imagine if the old man was our family. Politics should not be reaching this stage," he said.
Meanwhile, Batu Pahat district police chief ACP Abdul Wahib Musa said a 58-year-old suspect has been arrested and placed under a seven-day remand order from yesterday.
He added that the case is being investigated under Section 325 of the Penal Code.
"The police would like to remind supporters of any contesting parties to mind their conduct by not causing any disturbance throughout the campaign period for the 14th General Election," he said.
