NIBONG TEBAL: Barisan Nasional (BN) is serious about alleviating Penang's traffic congestion woes with the construction of a third overland bridge.
Penang Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Osman said when the volume along the two cross channel bridges have reached almost maximum capacity, BN will suggest the construction of a third overland bridge.
He said it will be cheaper than the proposed RM27 billion Penang Transport Masterplan, which the DAP–led state government have advocated.
Zainal Abdidin said half of the cost for the masterplan can be diverted into building cheaper and more efficient modes of transport instead of the masterplan, which involves massive land reclamation off Bayan Lepas.
He said the state government cannot pin their hopes on just one major infrastructure project.
"They must look at various options; including a cheaper one," he said in an interview with theSun.
Speaking on hillslope development, he said although approval was granted, residents are not convinced on the safety standards of such projects.
He said the DAP-led state government failed to take into consideration the grouses of residents living near hillslope developments.
Zainal Abidin was commenting on the landslides and floods which have inundated Penang in the past.
He said if the DAP government were to return to power, they should stop shifting the blame to BN for their own shortcomings and should focus on providing good governance and administration for a change.
