GEORGE TOWN: Pakatan Harapan (PH) will insist on doing away with the Goods and Services Taxation (GST) scheme, despite doubts raised by the Barisan Nasional (BN) that such an action would drain the country's financial reserves.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the Opposition alliance was confident of removing the GST because they have the mechanism to curb wastage and most importantly, to effectively curtail the scourge of corruption.
Lim told a mega ceramah gathering on the Han Chiang Private School grounds on Wednesday night that the Opposition was confident of doing this, as it would also maintain the distribution of the BR1M welfare scheme for low income Malaysians.
"BR1M will not go away, only caretaker Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak will go away," said Lim.
Earlier, PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that the DAP-led state government in Penang has proven to be effective in reducing debt, so therefore the model can be applicable at the federal level.
He said from an initial RM800 million in 2008, the state has managed to reduce the debt to RM63 million.
